About us

Ko wai maatou Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru

In the 1990s, Waikato was engaged in Treaty negotiations with the crown. Many of our Waikato hapuu prepared to formally unite in a way that adhered to the settlement process, including our hapuu Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru, and our three Marae, Maketuu, Te Kooraha, and Aaruka.

The idea of establishing a hapuu entity was first conceived during this time.  The idea rose again following the furore around the Foreshore and Seabed Act (2004). Still, there was no immediate need to establish.  The hapuu jumped into reactive mode again over the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011, and the Rohe Pootae Inquiry.

Faced with uncertainty around potential access to tribal land and tahatika (coastline), challenge to traditional practices, and Mana Motuhake(self-determination), the hapuu-wide (subtribe) entity was finally birthed. Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru Charitable Trust was finally established in 2013 to protect, preserve, and enhance the interests of Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru.

Since 2013, Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru has ensured our voice is heard regarding our rohe whenua and rohe moana. We are in the Pre-hearing stage of the current Marine and Coastal Areas (Takutai Moana) application. Our update on claims can be found on our claims page.

Over this last triennial, our purpose has been encapsulated in the principles of:

Kia ARO taatou, Kia RANGATIRA ai taatou, and Kia ORA ai taatou!

"Let us be mindful, let us be leaders, and let us be well."

This has formed the cornerstone of our commitment to the enrichment and vitality of our whaanau and the flourishing of our responsibility to our kaainga.

Our Mission

Whakarewa o ata ki runga i te hauaauru

Look to our identity for your centre. Me Mahuta takaroa, kia Mahuta ake—Be slow, steady, and correct in your decisions, to rise up and conquer.

Our mission is to elevate the spirits of our people, inspiring them to reach for the stars and realise the magic hidden within themselves.

Our goal is to awaken the most profound desires and aspirations that lie dormant within them.

With the mighty force of the Hauaauru winds at our backs, we are determined to ensure that our people's dreams and aspirations soar high, transcending the boundaries of what they thought was once possible.

Our Vision

Kia Mahuta Ake!

To rise up!

Te Ruunanga o Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru envisions a hapuu that is strong in identity and recognises collective strength.
As we rise, united in purpose, we become an unstoppable force, a beacon of empowerment and inspiration.

Kia Mahuta Ake serves as a rallying cry for our hapuu to collectively rise, embrace our heritage, and shape a future where Ngaati Mahuta ki te hauaauru, ki tai, stands awakened and flourishing.
