He Puna Kounga by Mihi Aspinall, Dan Walker and Tainui Tukiwaho

Our Co-Chair has written and published an academic article on Modern Mana Motuhake. Mana Motuhake - what does it mean in a modern context? How do we pursue it or improve our experience of it as modern/urban Māori?

'He Puna Kounga' is a tool that provides a tangible approach to understanding and enhancing mana motuhake. It assists individuals, groups, and organisations in assessing their current state of self-determination, identifying areas of strength and weakness, and taking steps towards improvement." He Puna Kounga". A practical tool to help you measure and find the balance of mana motuhake in your life by assessing factors like time, culture, energy, mana, pūtea, and whanaungatanga.

Embark on a transformative journey with "He Puna Kounga" creators Mihi Aspinall, Dan Walker, and Tainui Tukiwaho as they share how the framework was developed, how it can support your pursuit of mana motuhake, and explore how we each decide what the right life balance looks like for ourselves and our whanau.

Te Reo o Ngaati Mahuta ki Te Hauaauru

Te Roopu Rautaki reo were tasked with the business to Whakarauora i te reo o Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru

(address the declining use and learning of te reo Maaori within our hapuu and at our 3 marae)

Dame Te Ātairangikāhu once said, “Mā te reo e taea ai e ngā mokopuna te taumata o te Ao Maaori, o te Ao Whānui hoki”. The language will excel our mokopuna in te Āo Maaori and the wider world. They collectively created the hapuu Rautaki Reo strategy to form an organised approach to revitalise and renew our reo “Kia puawai te reo, Kia mau tonu ki ngaa tikanga, Kia pakari ai te iwi”.

Compliments to Te Roopu Rautaki Reo (2019 - 2023): They achieved their goals as planned. The tasks included producing the booklet “Ngaati Mahuta ki Tai, Ngaati Mahuta ki uta.” The following years included the production of 12 other books. These pukapuka recorded a historical account of hapuu landmarks, narratives, and other traditional practices.

The first set of 6 books was launched at Tahaaroa Primary School in December 2020. The next set of pukapuka were launched in 2022 at Te Kooraha marae and was re-visited at the 2023 Koroneihana i Te Kooraha. It is a remarkable achievement and, by association, a feather in Te Ruunanga's cap.

Our Te Reo o Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru (Te Reo NMKTH) maatanga reo and roopu has continued to produce tangiable efforts in our Reo Revitalisation.

Te Rautaki Reo has provided a clear roadmap for our language revitalisation efforts, fostering our people's renewed commitment and enthusiasm.
