    The Coastal Restoration Trust of New Zealand holds an annual conference to bring together the knowledge and experience and up to date research of coastal restoration.

Mahere Taiao

Aaruka and Te Kooraha Marae have secured funding to develop an Environmental Management Plan for the Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru Hapuu. This plan will be produced by utilising the expertise of whaanau within the sector, fulfilling a long-awaited aspiration that has been dormant for a while.

6 Taiao Domains

Whaanau were provided graphics with summaries of the six (6) domains in which Atua personified. The personification of each atua is a partial list and was utilised for communicating to whanau the domains from a maatauranga Maaori perspective.

  • Ranginui and Taawhirimaatea are personifications of air and the atmosphere. These domains encompass air currents, winds, migratory pathways, navigation, and climate change.

  • Papatuuaanuku is the personification of land use including waahi tapuu, gullies, mountains, cultural landscapes, and forestry. Aspects of land use personified by Ruaumoko, Taane Mahuta, Haumietiketike and Tuutewehiwehi were also included in this domain for summarising findings.

  • Tangaroa is the personification of the coastal marine area, foreshore and seabed, fisheries, aquaculture, and minerals.

  • Maru is the personification of freshwater, waterbodies, springs, riparian margins, minerals and mahinga kai.

  • Tuumatauenga is the personification of consultation and engagement, kawa and tikanga, and relationships.

  • Tiki and Hineahuone are the personification of hauora, kaitiakitanga, te reo Maaori, and employment.
